Backstory
Christmas Eve December 24, 2005, at 6:15PM, on his way to the evening service at his local community church, Mr. Herrera was involved in a deadly head-on collision on 36th street on the City’s West side due to a drunk driver. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were critically injured as well as Mr. Herrera. His left leg was completely mangled and he was rushed to Willford Hall Military Hospital. The doctors were unsure if it could be saved or amputated. Instead of taking the easier route, they decided to perform surgery in hopes of a positive outcome. After several surgeries, cadaver bones to help reconstruct, titanium rods, plates, and screws, the Dr’s were then faced with the uncertainty if Mr. Herrera would even be able to walk again, but fought hard to give him that chance.
During his long and gradual 2 year recovery, the numbers rose of other injured victims just like himself. Unfortunately, some of those victims didn’t make it. Rather than being angry, this sparked a deep interest in doing his research. He wanted to find out if there was anybody out there trying to make a change. To his surprise, there was no one. Though there are many organizations that continue to speak on behalf of this issue, he had yet to find any that pushed towards an actual solution. In order to resolve this issue, Mr. Herrera allowed this desire to drive him to do something, even to create an organization. So that’s when Get Home Safe Texas was established in 2011. His experience became the drive as well as the casualties that continued to increase. This transformed his passion to create some kind of solution for himself, and his community.
